The stories were written between 1980 and 1991, and published in Japan in various magazines, then collections. The contents of this compilation were selected by Gary Fisketjon (Murakami's editor at Knopf) and first published in English translation in 1993 (its Japanese counterpart was released later in 2005).

Several of the stories had already appeared (often with alternate translations) in the magazines,, and The Magazine (Mobil Corp.) before this compilation was published. Stylistically and thematically, the collection aligns with Murakami's previous work. The stories mesh normality with surrealism, and focus on painful issues involving loss, destruction, confusion and loneliness. The title for the book is derived from the final story in the collection.

Discussion questions - 'And none of the records was in the right jacket' (p.242) - 'There would be Rolling Stones record in a Glenn Miller jacket, a recording of the Mitch Miller chorus in the jacket for Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe' (p.242) The significance of the dwarf's CDs being in different jackets is that it represents the non-mundane life that the narrator can have if he breaks the agreement that the dwarf and himself had made. It also represents the order that is absent from the dwarf's life and order that could be absent in the narrator's life.

[They] take place in parallel worlds not so much remote from ordinary life as hidden within its surfaces. The dwarf initially tells the narrator to relax and wait for the girl from Stage 8. Once she appears, the dwarf takes over the narrator’s body. The narrator thinks “it felt like a continuation of my dream. If I was using one dream to create another, where was the real me in all this?” (p. 261) It’s obvious that the narrator “captures” the heart of the girl from Stage 8, because after they are thru dancing, they make their way to the forest. This is where I believe the story has room to. I believe a proper ending would give the story deeper thought as connections could be made rather than just leaving stagnate pieces of text for the reader to decipher.

The dwarf had showed the possibilities of how exciting life could be like unlike their normal mundane life through dancing. This sparks the curiosity of the workers for change and resulted into the initiation of the revolution. Although after realizing that it wasn't the kind of change they wanted, the dwarf was blamed for introducing them to the idea of change.

Paralleling this idea is the negotiation between the dwarf and the narrator resulted into the girl of his interest's decomposition and causing him to reject the idea of change / leaving his mundane life for a new, exciting one. The manufacturing of elephants represents a human desire for control as it is a way for the world in which the narrator lives, to control and dominate over nature. The people attempt to change the infinite possibilities and problems related to natural elephant births (2 year gestation period, 1 calf at a time, 5 years between pregnancies) in order to be able to know exactly the outcome. This portrays the need that humans have to know the future, and to not have any questions in life. - ' And none of the records was in the right jacket' (p. 242) -> showing the life the narrator wants subconsciously [which is the non-mundane routine life] - '.with the yellow ceiling and posts.my helmet and pants were also yellow' (p. 245) -> displays the order and organization of mundane life the narrator decides to keep - 'Then the revolution started.
